We are very excited to announce our new upcoming show, Tonal Array: Aquatints from the 20th and 21st Century, which will open on Friday, February 20, 2015 with an opening reception from 5-7 pm at the gallery. The show will continue until April 11, 2015.

Aquatint is an etching technique that creates areas of tone through the use of a powdered or ground resin that is sprinkled on a metal plate prior to being bitten by etching acid. Although primarily used in the 18th and 19th centuries as a medium to reproduce the delicate fluidity and transparency of watercolors and paintings, the aquatint survived as an artist’s medium because of its atmospheric effects and flat wash properties. Tonal Array draws attention to the talented printmakers of the 20th and 21st century who experimented and pushed the boundaries of aquatint’s potential. Varying between flat color planes and incredible plate texture, as well as dramatic areas of light and dark, these artists demonstrate a fluid and experimental handling of the medium. The resulting images have an expressive strength and visual intensity that relays the ingenuity to be found in the world of original printmaking.

The Old Print Gallery’s 2014 Winter Contemporary Show will open on Friday, November 21, 2014 with a free nighttime celebratory reception from 5-8pm at the gallery. Works by thirteen contemporary printmakers, all created within the last two years, were chosen for the show. The prints selected are an impressive and alluring display of the current eclecticism found in contemporary printmaking.  Purposeful and inventive, the prints are successful experiments in medium, color, and scale, and for many of the artists selected, the prints are a deviation from their previous creative propensities. The show will remain on view in the gallery until February 14, 2014.

Highlights include a haunting and mysterious photo intaglio landscape by Dublin-based Nancy Previs and three small mezzotints of the human form by Australian printmaker Cleo Wilkinson, whose printed visages emerge from a velvety black with a tonal richness and striking subtlety.  The exhibit also features three prints from emerging artist Heather McMordie’s new series, Persistent Optimism, an exciting experiment in prints-turned-drawings, each with elements of lithography, woodcut, graphite, colored pencil, and charcoal.

The 2014 Winter Contemporary Show will also showcase several works by local DC printmakers, including an abstract and playful watercolor-based monotype by Philip Bennet, bold screenprint monotypes with woodcut elements by Susan Goldman, and artfully rendered still lifes in etching and aquatint by Jake Muirhead.

Mary Manusos

“For many years my art has held together as a statement of color and response to places and situations I have experienced. Then in 1976, I become fascinated with the bright colors and light of Mexico.”

We are happy to introduce the work of Mary Manusos to our blog readers. We featured California RB Two. [Hotel California.] and San Francisco LB Two. [Convento San Franciso.] in our RED show, and received many compliments from show attendees on her pieces and work. (San Francisco sold, but California RB Two is still available!) As a result, we recently acquired one of her Oaxaca series prints- a stunning woodcut diptych on handmade paper.

Mary Manusos was born in San Diego, California.  She studied at San Diego State University, then at University of Wisconsin at Madison. Manusos has been creating art for almost four decades and has had numerous single artist shows, juried shows, and has received nine grants. She has written numerous books, including D’ART OBJECTS and Woman’s Self Image. Her work is in numerous public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, Tweed Museum, Cleveland Museum, and the Library of Congress.

Her fascination with the rich colors and textures of Mexican architecture and landscape resulted in the creation of 600 SX-70 photographs, which were manipulated “to accentuate the essence of each particular situation recorded.” The images were edited and published as D’ART OBJECTS, a collaboration between Mary Manusos and John Chakeres, in 1979. These photographs, along with her travels, played an important role in the structure and content of her subsequent art work.

Excerpt from Manusos’ Artist Statement:

“…Prints of landscape and architecture are close up views of a state of documenting then removing from the place they are found.  The resulting portraits of place and form are dismembered and put back together to make new propositions.  These images are usually found in simple situations on the course of a walk.  There is not much that distinguishes one building from another, a ditch, a road, a hedge, a blanket, or a flower.  The distinction comes when I decide to use an image and create its urgency.  The works are in response to what I feel about the Latin American landscape.  A landscape that is given meaning by the lives that it supports.  The variety of ephemera of human intervention and invention on the landscape is of great interest to me.  The history left behind evokes a story as I record it.  I can bring many emotions to the work through the use of my colors and the strength of my lines.  One can feel the weight of the place I am defining and the sunshine that exudes from it’s life force…”

RED show

We are very excited to announce our early spring show, RED, which will open with a nighttime reception on February 15, 2013.  RED is a group show of contemporary and early 20th century printmakers who feature the emboldened and passionate hue of red in their prints. Red is the color of blood, fire, earthen clay and blushing petals, and as such, has strong symbolic connections to life and vitality. The selected artists use this energizing pigment to excite the eye and engage viewers- drawing them into their dynamic compositions.

Highlights include a monotype, Fast Forward, by Washington, DC artist Rosemary Cooley, whose concentrated red tones pulsate beneath more delicate looping white and blue strokes. Similarly, red weaves its way along limbs, eyes, and biomorphic shapes in Cantos y Voces and outlines two faces in Black & White, both by Karima Muyaes. Here, red symbolizes blood-ties and familial relationships, linking disparate visages together into a cohesive whole.

Red also is used by artists in representations of our natural world. It shows up in the rust-colored canyons of John Ross’s collagraphs, in the flushed petals of Clare Romano’s Mallorcan Flower and Nina Muys’ Hibiscus, and in the ominous and bruised red and purple sky of Frederick Mershimer’s Eye of the Storm.
