“Resonant Terrain” Opens This Week!

Resonant Terrain opens on Friday, April 17th, with a nighttime reception at the gallery from 5-7pm. The prints selected for the show unveil the emotional power and pull of the natural world, a beauty and mystery that entraps and enchants artists, and serves as a deep pool of inspiration for their work. This exhibit of landscapes in print features work by both 20th century and contemporary printmakers and will remain on view until July 11th.

“Resonant Terrain” to open on April 17th

The Old Print Gallery is excited to announce its new print exhibit, Resonant Terrain, which will open on Friday April 17th, with a nighttime reception at the gallery from 5-7pm. This exhibit of landscapes in print features work by both 20th century and contemporary printmakers, including Matt Brown, Margaret Patterson, Joseph Essig, Sylvie Covey, John Taylor Arms, and more. The selected works range from representational to abstract, depicting vistas, valleys, and views of our shared terrain. The show will remain on view until July 11th.

The landscape has a long tradition in art, and Resonant Terrain explores how printmakers choose to depict the natural world through its evolution and transformation into the modern era. Although united in the theme of landscape, the works are realized through differing conceptual and methodical approaches. Some, like Robert Kipniss, use the velvety blacks and luminous whites of a mezzotint to infuse landscapes with a poetic melancholy and stillness- depicting a terrain seemingly untouched by the viewer or even the artist. Others, like Harry Wickey and Gerald Scheck, use the chaotic crosshatching of a drypoint needle or the unpredictable acidic bite of the aquatint to evoke the untamed, wild majesty of the natural world.

As our landscapes evolve and modernize, so too do the artists’ tools and technologies, as shown in the methods of two contemporary printmakers selected for the exhibit. Nancy Previs crafts photopolymer plates from her own un-retouched photographs, documenting the life-force of the natural world found hidden within her increasingly urbanized home city of Dublin.  Using a similar photogravure process, Sylvie Covey transforms her own photographs into impressive, mammoth-sized prints of the vast Wyoming landscape.

Seen together, the prints selected for the show unveil the emotional power and pull of the natural world, a beauty and mystery that entraps and enchants artists, and serves as a deep pool of inspiration for their work.

87117Our Winter Contemporary Show is up on the gallery walls for only 2 more days. Works by thirteen contemporary printmakers, all created within the last two years, were chosen for the show. The prints selected are an impressive, alluring display of the current eclecticism found in contemporary printmaking. The show includes work by three local DC artists-Jake Muirhead, Susan Goldman, and Philip Bennet- as well as many regional and international printmakers. Tonal Array: Aquatints from the 20th and 21st Century opens next Friday, February 20th, with an opening reception from 5-7 pm at the gallery.  Tonal Array draws attention to the talented printmakers of the 20th and 21st century who experimented and pushed the boundaries of aquatint’s potential. Varying between flat color planes and incredible plate texture, these artists demonstrate a fluid and experimental handling of the medium. The resulting images have an expressive strength and visual intensity that relay the ingenuity to be found in the world of original printmaking. The show will remain on view until April 11th, 2015.

Our February 2015 Showcase will hit mailboxes next week. This edition draws heavily on a collection of historic American prints and portraits, as well as important Revolutionary War maps. Several pieces selected for the catalog  are exceptionally rare works of Americana and rarely show up on the market or at auction.

We are very excited to announce our new upcoming show, Tonal Array: Aquatints from the 20th and 21st Century, which will open on Friday, February 20, 2015 with an opening reception from 5-7 pm at the gallery. The show will continue until April 11, 2015.

Aquatint is an etching technique that creates areas of tone through the use of a powdered or ground resin that is sprinkled on a metal plate prior to being bitten by etching acid. Although primarily used in the 18th and 19th centuries as a medium to reproduce the delicate fluidity and transparency of watercolors and paintings, the aquatint survived as an artist’s medium because of its atmospheric effects and flat wash properties. Tonal Array draws attention to the talented printmakers of the 20th and 21st century who experimented and pushed the boundaries of aquatint’s potential. Varying between flat color planes and incredible plate texture, as well as dramatic areas of light and dark, these artists demonstrate a fluid and experimental handling of the medium. Ink & Grain’s Last Week: Make sure to stop by the Gallery to see Ink & Grain before the show ends. Ink & Grain highlights 20th century printmakers who excelled in woodcuts and wood engravings. One of the most ancient forms of printmaking, the woodcut saw an energized revival during the 20th century. American printmakers experimented heavily with technique, by manipulating the grain of the wooden matrix and crafting new methods of ink and color application. Ink & Grain celebrates this renaissance and the skilled printmakers who worked in the medium, creating in the form of editioned prints, hand-made books, and commercial book illustrations. The show’s last day is this Saturday, November 15th.

2014 Winter Contemporary Show Opening Reception: Join us on Friday, November 21, from 5-8pm at the Gallery, as we celebrate the opening of our new 2014 Winter Contemporary Show. Works by thirteen different printmakers, all created within the last two years, were chosen for the show. The prints offer a dizzying array of techniques and styles from local DC, regional, and international printmakers. Purposeful and inventive, the prints are successful experiments in medium, color, and scale. The show will remain on view until February 14, 2014.

A Path Through Darkness- Whole, Sound, Color Light Opening Reception: This Thursday, November 13, from 4:30 to 6:30pm, celebrate with Susan Goldman at an opening reception for her new prints, in a show titled A Path Through Darkness: Whole, Sound, Color, Light. The reception will be held at the Lombardi Atrium of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center of Georgetown University Hospital. The show is presented by the Arts and Humanities Program.

Werner Drewes: Artist and Humanitarian Opening Reception: A show of works by celebrated printmaker Werner Drewes will be on view at the United States District Court in Greenbelt, Maryland. The Opening Reception is on Thursday, November 20, 2014, from 5:00pm- 6:30pm. Opening remarks will be made by Karen E. D. Seibert, granddaughter of the artist, and a Doctors Without Borders representative. 10% of all proceeds from the sales at the Opening Reception with be donated to Doctors Without Borders. The show will remain on view until January 30, 2015, with show hours of Monday- Friday, 9am to 4pm. The show is presented by the U. S. District Court and The Hyattstown Mill Arts Project.

Pastel Unleashed: A Mixed-Media Approach Artists’ Reception and Awards Ceremony: OPG printmaker Philip Bennet has a print in this juried show, presented by the Maryland Pastel Society. The show was an invitation to artists by the Society to rethink soft pastel. Work entered in the show was required to have, in addition to soft pastel, one or more other painting or drawing mediums. Philip Bennet’s monotype with pastel Swirls was selected for the exhibit. The Artists’ Reception and Awards Ceremony is on November 23, 2014 from 2:00pm- 4:00pm. The Exhibition opens on November 22, 2014 and closes on January 4, 2015.
