Upcoming at The Old Print Gallery

87117Our Winter Contemporary Show is up on the gallery walls for only 2 more days. Works by thirteen contemporary printmakers, all created within the last two years, were chosen for the show. The prints selected are an impressive, alluring display of the current eclecticism found in contemporary printmaking. The show includes work by three local DC artists-Jake Muirhead, Susan Goldman, and Philip Bennet- as well as many regional and international printmakers. Stop by to see these prints before the walls change.

Tonal Array: Aquatints from the 20th and 21st Century opens next Friday, February 20th, with an opening reception from 5-7 pm at the gallery.  Tonal Array draws attention to the talented printmakers of the 20th and 21st century who experimented and pushed the boundaries of aquatint’s potential. Varying between flat color planes and incredible plate texture, these artists demonstrate a fluid and experimental handling of the medium. The resulting images have an expressive strength and visual intensity that relay the ingenuity to be found in the world of original printmaking. The show will remain on view until April 11th, 2015.

Our February 2015 Showcase will hit mailboxes next week. This edition draws heavily on a collection of historic American prints and portraits, as well as important Revolutionary War maps. Several pieces selected for the catalog  are exceptionally rare works of Americana and rarely show up on the market or at auction.

Outside the Margin Series

Our 2014 Winter Contemporary Show is still on view at The Old Print Gallery. One of the best things about doing the Winter Contemporary Show every year is catching up with all our talented contemporary artists, seeing and learning about their new projects and experiments in printmaking. It is exciting to witness the evolution of their art over time, as they play with scale, new color palettes, subject matter, and technique.

Susan Goldman (no stranger to the OPG blog- read her interview here) is one of our contemporary printmakers from DC. We have represented her work for several years now, and her new series, entitled “Outside the Margin” is an intriguing transition from her previous work. While smaller in size than most of her other prints, you can certainly link the thematic elements to her earlier monotypes. In the past, Susan has worked with the image of an amphora, exploring and celebrating ancient civilizations’ reverence for the object. Homer describes the vessel as the “Prima Materia”, a metaphor for the womb of the earth. Swirling and blossoming, Goldman’s amphorae mirror the female silhouette as it generates and nurtures new life. In her new series, Goldman uses the motif of an amphora, but layers in new pattern work and symbolism-like concentric circles and blossoms.
“This varied edition evolved out of mixing my earlier ideas about pattern inspired by travel to Morocco and my new ideas about simplifying my approach to imagery of flowers, targets and amphorae. The layering of multiple print mediums relates to an archaeology of process, what is below is mysterious and fragmented, but as one uncovers the clues, a new picture emerges that references the past and the present.”- Susan Goldman

Today we are sharing the work of Nancy Previs, a newly signed printmaker from Dublin. Previs’s print, Harmonious Rhythm I, is in our 2014 Winter Contemporary Show, which opens tonight (!!!!) with an Opening Reception at the gallery from 5-8pm.

A fine art printmaker, Nancy Previs is also a photographer and sound recordist. She is drawn to capturing the essence and beauty of the natural world, specializing in photo intaglio. Her work has been exhibited in group shows in Dublin and the United States. In Northern Ireland, her work has been selected for inclusion in the Royal Ulster Academy’s Annual Exhibition. She is a member of Black Church Print Studio, Dublin and the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland. Among her qualifications, she holds undergraduate degrees from UMass, Amherst, The National College of Art and Design (NCAD), Dublin, and a masters degree in LIS from University College Dublin (UCD). Born and raised in Connecticut, Nancy Previs lives in Dublin, Ireland from where she makes regular trips to the US, most frequently to Washington DC and New York City.

Artist Statement: Inspired by the essence of energy around us – the life force of the landscape – she crafts photopolymer plates using her own un-retouched photographic images, creating traditional handmade multi-plate nature prints. Her images capture nature’s simple beauty – especially that found in open spaces, such as parks and fields, near water or high in the hills, around the island of Ireland and on the east coast of America.
