New Additions: Muggletonian Astronomical Prints.

A set of six astronomical engravings that were drawn by Isaac Frost in 1846 to demonstrate the Muggletonian belief that the earth is at the center of the universe. The religious sect known as “Muggletonians” developed after the English Civil War in the 1650s.  Among other things, they believed that the Earth was the center of the universe, that matter preexisted the creation of Earth, and that acts of divinity and faith, such as prayer and religious worship were insignificant. These prints were produced as an alternative to the Newtonian beliefs of gravity and terrestrial and celestial motion. The titles of the six prints are: (plates 7, 9 and 10) System According to the Holy Scriptures, and (plates 3 and 6) The Newtonian System.

The prints, in beautiful tones of blues and yellows, were engraved by Chubb & Son, London and printed by George Baxter in “Oil Colors,” an arduous and time-consuming printing process. Works by Baxter are rare. Although his patented printing method resulted in rich gradations of color, the overall process was too costly and difficult to appeal to and sustain commercial manufacture. Each sheet measures 10 1/8 x 12 1/2″, and we are selling the whole set of six for $2,750.00.
