Today we welcome Allan Simpson, a contemporary printmaker from NY, to the Old Print Gallery. Our OPG inventory now includes three prints by this serigraph printer, two very recent prints- Winter, G. W. Bridge and Railway Watch– and an earlier landscape, Prairie Sunset.
Serigraph prints are produced through the use of stencil and silk screening. Each color has to be printed separately, making even the simplest compositions a laborious and time consuming process. For this reason, many serigraph prints forgo excessive color gradations and shading, employing only four to five colors in each print. Scenes are distilled down to compositions of basic interlocking shapes and color. The result is a very bold and geometrically intriguing print.
